The Bonded Warehouse
The Bonded Warehouse has a long and chequered history. The earliest parts of the building date back to 1799 but it is also believed to include parts of a single storey structure dating back into the 17th century. The main building is a three storey building with walls up to 13 inches thick in places and an unusual semi-circular end, the reason for this no one can explain. The Bonded Warehouse held taxable goods such as tea, spirits and tobacco. By 1829 a second storey had been added and extended yet again in 1849 during the canal company’s most prosperous period.
Around this time a variety goods were stored for transhipment in addition to the taxable items. Internal cast iron columns have slots to take horizontal boards thus permitting an entirely flexible compartmentation of the building’s lower two floors.
With such a busy industrious environment and health and safety not what it is today many people are believed to be involved accidents and unfortunately some are believed to have died.
By 1980 the Bonded Warehouse was empty and derelict but was listed as being of special architectural and historic importance and by 1989 it has been fully restored.
